TROPICAL STORM MAWAR 2023 BREWING IN THE WESTERN PACIFIC

In the Western Pacific Basin, a significant storm is developing and is expected to approach Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands in the coming days. Currently, the storm is a broad, poorly organized system, located at 4.9 degrees north and 147.8 degrees east. It has sustained winds of 30 miles per hour and a pressure of 1007 millibars, moving westward at 4 miles per hour.

As of May 19th, 10.00 UTC, the storm is 950 kilometers south-southeast of Guam and 1090 kilometers south-southeast of the Northern Mariana Islands. No warnings or watches are in effect yet, but this may change as the storm intensifies and potentially becomes a named tropical storm.

Both the Joint Typhoon Warning Center and Force Thirteen agree on the storm's current intensity. Over the next few days, the storm is expected to remain relatively stationary before moving north-northwest or northward, intensifying into a tropical storm and possibly reaching typhoon status before affecting Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. These areas should closely monitor the storm, as they may experience tropical storm or even typhoon conditions.

Sea surface temperatures are warm, around 30-31 degrees Celsius, and will remain so along the storm's path. This will not hinder the storm's development. Rainfall accumulations of 4 to 8 inches could cause problems for affected areas.

Model predictions suggest a slow and gradual intensification of the storm, possibly becoming a typhoon or strong tropical storm within the next three to four days. Wind shear levels will play a significant role in determining the storm's intensity. Sea surface temperatures and humidity levels are favorable for the storm's development, with no dry air expected to impact the system.

Currently, there is no defined circulation in the storm, but it is trying to organize itself. Stay updated with the latest information on this developing storm by following our Facebook account.
